Quilter of the Month June 2015: Karen Ratliff

With only a few days left of June, we still have time for the Quilter of the Month! This month we are featuring another IMQG board member, Karen Ratliff!!

Name:  Karen Ratliff
Hometown:  Indianapolis, IN
Current Location: Greenwood

What sewing machine do you use? Does it have a name? Do you like it?

Where do you sew? What’s your space look like?
My formal dining room is converted into my sewing room.  I have a kitchen table that we cut into a combination sewing table, cutting table, and light board.  I also have a really neat art paint cabinet that I use to store scraps and thread.

What makes you a modern quilter?
I’m not sure that I really classify myself as a modern quilter only.  I like most quilting but am most drawn to art quilting and modern quilting.  When I started searching for a guild, I felt more at home with the modern quilt guild.  I like the use of modern fabrics, solids, and a new take on the old style blocks.

Tell me about your first quilting experience.
My first experience was about 30 years ago.  I made a king sized quilt for my mom and dad.   I used a technique call “Lap Quilting”.  This is similar to today’s “quilt as you go”.   I recently took that old quilt and cut  it into four smaller quilts.

What is your favorite part of making a quilt?
The creative/design process.   I will often draw a full sized drawing of a quilt so that I can use it as a pattern for my quilted artwork.

What is your most dreaded part of making a quilt?
Knowing that I won’t be able to quickly finish something.

Where are your favorite brick and mortar quilt shops?
Crimson Tate and Backdoor.

What are your favorite online fabric shops?
I like Dharma Trading Company for PDF fabric and dying supplies and Superior Thread for thread.  I haven’t shopped online for fabric too often because touching and seeing the fabric in person is a big part in my decision making process.  It is also nice to support the local businesses.  I have purchased a little fabric through but mostly because it was not available locally.

What time of day do you usually sew? Do you listen to music, or watch TV?
During the week, work gets in the way so I sew in the evenings (when I can) but not too late or I have trouble winding down and sleeping.  On the weekend I sew any time I can!

What's your favorite Kona Cotton color?
Kona PFD white

What do you love most about IMQG?
The members inspire me!

Do you sew/make other things besides quilts?
Bags and garments.

What's your favorite project you've completed?
I absolutely love my most recent quilt I made.  It is a landscape from an aerial view.  I was inspired from looking out the window of an airplane.

Following are a few more quilts that I have completed and have pictures of.

Thanks again Karen for being our featured Quilter of the Month!!
