We're Growing - February Recap

We cannot tell you how super excited to see that February's Meeting had the biggest turnout by far I think we had 22 quilters and we "ran out of chairs and space". This is the best problem we could have. We will likely move the April Meeting from Crimson Tate to a nearby location so we can accommodate more quilters so no worries. Anyhow here's a recap incase you missed it...

We kicked off the meeting with announcements:

Sleep Over Retreat which is less than a month away if you haven't RSVPed and are still interested find all the details here.
Next actual Meeting is at Always in Stitches March 24th.

Membership cards were distributed. Membership cards must be picked up in person when attending a meeting we are not mailing them at this time.
IMQG might have another round of the Block Swap stay tuned for details or follow the discussion on facebook.
In April several quilt members may attend the Quilt Show April 13-15 in Cincinnati this is not likely to be an official event however we are in contact with members of the Cincinnati Modern Quilt who will be showing at the show. Details will follow.

After announcements there was an awesome round of show and tell - some photos below others to follow on Flickr. The quilting going on so far in 2012 is AWESOME.

January Meeting Recap

For the January Meeting we met up at French Seam another one of the "newer" fabric shops we have here in Indianapolis.

We had excellent attendance with new faces and some old favorites as well despite the snow outside. Everyone brought the most beautiful projects for show and tell. And Courtney of French Seam donated supplies for us to make the cutest little pattern weights from yo-yo makers - and much to our surprise most of us had never used a yo-yo maker! We followed up with some yummy cupcakes and shopping to round out the day. Here are some of the projects we saw.

Lisa brought an older project to share made with a charm pack. Cute!

Rachael also shared her Amy Butler quilt which will be a gift for an upcoming wedding.

December Holiday Party Recap

We rounded out 2011 with our December Holiday Party/Meeting at Crimson Tate last weekend. We had an awesome group of ladies sewing and visiting. Lots of great projects, snacks, and quilting chats. Thank you to all the ladies who came out and who made Christmas Ornaments this was a fun event and we cannot wait for 2012 to see everyone again.

A bit of guild news...

Exciting Announcement - We're having a Sleep Over Sew at LindsayC's in March details to follow but please mark your calendars for March 9th and 10th.
Membership Cards are available they were distributed at the meeting. This can be used in conjunction with a Joann's VIP card for a 10% off discount at Joann's click here for details. You do need both the Joann's VIP card and the IMQG card to receive the discount. Please note if you are a member you must attend a meeting to pick up your IMQG membership cards. We will not be mailing this out at this time. See Rachael, Tisha or Katie at the next IMQG meeting to pick one up.
January meeting will be at French Seam and will include some sort of "demo"/class activity - details to follow.
February we will be meeting at Crimson Tate again where we MIGHT bust out the large collection of Hawaiian prints for a project
In 2012 we will have the regular monthly meetings and one "special event" a quarter (the first being the Sleep Over)
We are hoping to wrap up the Bee in early 2012 and Tisha presented an idea for another swap which she saw at the NYC guild meeting. Information on that to follow at later meetings.

And these shopping bags which she's making from her vintage sheets she picked up in the vintage sheet swap from the spring.

And last but not least Heather shared these hexagons she was working on. Thank you so MUCH for having us Heather and we cannot wait to have many more meetings in Crimson Tate we love the new shop!

Pink, Lime & White Charity Quilt

During the November IMQG event, we started working on blocks for a charity quilt. Many of us donated scraps of pink, lime and white fabric, for a modern take on traditional Christmas colors!

Those who made it to the show created sampler blocks in these colors for a quilt. We chose to donate it to the Assistance League of Indianapolis for their silent auction, to be held December 1st. The Assistance League helps clothe 3,000 kids in the Indianapolis Public School system as well as serve the community in many ways, and we are happy to be able to help them do what they do. :)

In order to meet the tight deadline, Rachael volunteered to assemble the quilt blocks, piece together the back and quilt this project. She finished up the quilt top the same night she received all the blocks, and it was quilted and bound about 6 days after that!

Didn't she do an awesome job?!

November Wrap-Up: Urban Folk Art Demo

This weekend, the Indy Modern Quilt Guild was invited to do a demo at the Urban Folk Art show, a new modern craft show in the area. We spent Saturday and Sunday afternoons at the show making pink, lime and white sampler blocks for a charity quilt (a modern take on traditional Christmas colors), and sharing our love of modern quilting with anyone who would listen.

Lindsay brought two of her quilts (cathedral windows mini behind her head and diamonds mini to the side) and several quilt blocks in progress. Several members of the group enjoyed cutting fabric with the Accuquilt GO! Baby.

Katie used her graphic design skeelz to create these awesome postcards to promote our group! We had several new people stop and talk to us about coming to a future meeting, so it was great to have these on hand to give people our contact info.

We had a genius idea to pin these quilts to the top of the gym mats, but then got scared that the Monon Center people would get mad so we took them down.

Barbara's style is so innovative! We love seeing how she manipulates fabric and works images into her quilt designs.

Holly came to her first meeting this week and shared her super-cozy quilt. Looks very vintage modern!

She's a super-fast quilter, and also recently whipped up these since the last time I saw her. Rachael has volunteered to work all of our sampler blocks into a finished quilt. THANK YOU RACHAEL!

We worked, talked, and checked out the show's vendors. But mostly just had fun! These photos are from Saturday's demo, and Katie took some great photos of Sunday's event, so look for those soon. :)

September Meeting Recap

In September the Indy Modern Quilt Guild met at Quilts Plus. We had 5 new members in attendance and it was great to see familiar faces return too. We kicked off the meeting with a little meet and greet and show and tell. And let me tell you everyone brought some AWESOME projects to share. It was very impressive.

We followed up with some announcements about the Free Spirit Challenge, Our November Event, and the Tear Challenge, Upcoming Meetings. And then we got down to pressing, sewing, visiting, shopping, and enjoying ourselves.

November Event will be a 2 day demonstration that we are giving at the Urban Folk Art Show. Additional details to follow but if you need information please contact Lindsay Conner or indymodernquiltguild@gmail.com
Virtual Bee Participants we are still waiting for one set of fabric. Katie will send a reminder out to the group so hopefully we can get this finished up soon.
Tear Challenge - Everyone who wanted to particpate at the meeting tore pieces of fabric off to make into a project. Project can be anything of the participants choosing. You can use as much or as little as the fabric as you like. Add fabric if needed. Try and complete by December meeting (or previous meeting if possible).
Upcoming Meetings are October 15th, November 4-6, and December 11 (note the December Date has changed)
Events and Meetings format - Katie and Tisha shared that this year we experimented with different types of meetings trying to see what people were interested in and we found that sewing meetings were more popular so we are looking toward having each month in 2012 have sewing meetings trying to stick to the 3rd Satruday of the month when possible and then we'll probably schedule a separate "social event" type meeting only once a quarter.

Katie C bought some of her t-shirt quilts. We enjoyed her use of the t-shirts in the border.

Everyone's Fat Quarter will be "torn" into pieces and Each Tear Challenge Participate will get a piece to use in a project this fall.

August Meeting Recap

For August we met at Rachael's house then walked over to the State Fair. It was a great evening of conversation, beverages, snacks, and $1 milkshakes. We were all really excited when we saw the sign for the milkshake special. Plus, it was free admission day as well.

This guy was one of cuties we saw right away. Can anything else just scream Indiana?

Off to the Home and Family Arts Building to admire the handy-work of some fellow Hoosiers. This quilt was hanging right as you come in. Very bright and inviting.
Lots of traditional quilts were showcased. Hopefully next year a few of us can try and enter our county fairs and represent IMQG.

We also checked out the non-quilting stuff...cakes, crochet, sewing and even Lego cities.

For September please bring a fat quarter with you to Quilts Plus. We will be doing a block challenge. If you haven't showed off your Habitat Challenge yet, please share as well. Can't wait to everyone in September.

Quilters on Quilts July Recap

Saturday's event was super hot which I'm sure scared away quilters however we still brought the quilts out to the IMA grounds for some Quilters on Quilts. Everyone's picnic blankets were different but surprisingly they were all about the same exact size.
Jenny shared a work in progress quilt strawberry picnic blanket.

As well as her flowers and leaves aka lima beans and wheels quilt ;o)

Katie brought her rock pocket scrap quilt.

Rachael brought her vintage sheet star quilt.

And Tisha brought her latest purple "brick" quilt (sorry I can't recall the name of the pattern but it's still awesome).
We lined the quilts up and then picnicked in the shade at the IMA. We even attracted some random person who photographed our quilts in the lawn.

During the meeting we passed out the free spirit fabrics, discussed our latest projects, and discussed that we would probably avoid outdoor events in the humidity and museum events in the future.

Throughout the year we are encouraging everyone to get vintage modern.

We had the sheet swap so you could get some vintage loveliness. We also have been sharing some Vintage Modern Inspiration - more to come. But we want to invite all Indianapolis Modern Quilters to complete any kind of Vintage Modern piece - be it a quilt, bag, wall hanging, dress, etc, to be displayed when at the Urban Folks Craft Fair in November. Find the specific details below:

Details:

Sewn fabric pieces must be Vintage Modern - this is your adaptation of this there are no official rules for what is vintage modern
Pieces can be any type of quilted work - quilts, wall hangings, bags, dresses, etc etc
Vintage modern can be of any size but must be transportable in a car. ;o)
Pieces must be completed and turned in on or before October 15th (you may turn them in at any meeting to to Tisha, Rachael, or Katie or make other arrangements)
All pieces will be returned post the Craft Fair
All pieces will be displayed at the Craft Fair and will be photographed and appear on the IMQG blog as well all Indy sewists are invited to come to the fair to see them and invite their friends and neighbors!

July Event - Quilters on Quilts

For July we are having kind of a "guerilla art" event where we want you to meet us at the Indianapolis Museum of Art with quilts for an event we're calling Quilters on Quilts. We are hoping for a nice day to picnic and discuss quilting and fabrics and just be merry outside on quilts. Please feel free to pack a picnic and join us.

July Challenge - Upcycle Challenge

Along with our monthly events, we wanted to encourage everyone to participate in a challenge to keep us all sewing and playing with fabric. And we thought that "Upcyling something" would be appropriate - because it's like recycling only better! Find the rules below. If you have any questions let us know:

Find something that's fabric that's old, ugly, or blue
Transform it into something that's new
Add or take away as much as you like
Finish by July 31st (if you have it ready bring to the July Meeting)
Neither the item you start with nor finish with has to be a quilt just something with fabric.
Post before and after photos on flickr, Facebook, or your blog and when complete and email us the link indymodernquiltguild@gmail.com so we can feature it here.

For June we met at Bazbeaux's Pizza in Broad Ripple during the week. A bit odd, but the entire month of June especially on the weekend may not have worked out well. We made some announcement:

Habitat Challenge due in August
Dates for meetings the rest of the year, some details still be worked out.
Upcoming challenges to get thinking about.

Here are some of the great quilts showcased. We even had spectators; the ducks really liked the quilts. Great to see everyone's finishes for the month.

For July the Challenge is to upcycle something. It's pretty open.

Good morning fellow sewists. Indy Modern Quilt Guild is happy to announce that we will be participating in the Jay McCarroll Habitat Challenge. Jay McCarroll is a Project Runway winner and has designed his own fabrics with Free Spirit.

We found out last minute about it so we said we would have around 15 participants. This challenge is first come, first serve. Fabrics will be passed out at the July meeting, if you can't make it, you will need to pay for postage.

Rules:
1. Use as much of the Free Spirit Fabric as possible (although you don't have to use it all)
2. You can add 3 or fewer additional solids (including on the back)
3. Theme & size can be anything of your choosing
4. Have fun & be creative
5. Challenge piece is due by August 19th.

Robert Kaufman Solids Challenge-- Val

Here's what Val had to say about her darling solids quilt, called "Flock in the Box":

I was unclear about the exact rules of the challenge, but this is what I decided my rules would be:

1. Use all the fabric from the charm pack.

2. Add one additional solid color.

3. Finish by the end of April.

4. Stick with only solid prints, no patterns.

Here is how I did in the challenge, on a pass/fail grading scale:

1. I used all the fabric except I lost two tiny corners that I can't find anywhere. (I'm going to count that as a Pass.)

2. I added Kona Snow as the background and Kona Bone for the binding. (2 extra colors...Fail!)

3. I just finished yesterday. Only a month late. (Dang... failed again!)

4. I so so so wanted to add one printed fabric into this quilt to jazz it up, but I fought my temptation. (Pass!)

So, that's 50%. What is that... an F? Oh well, I am still happy with the results and had fun creating this quilt.

Tisha's RK Challenge quilt

This quilt started as a gift for my brother in law. He wanted something for a friend having a baby girl that wasn't doing traditional. I immediately thought rainbow and wanted to build from there. Chose a gray color that would keep the colors looking bright. Let's hope he loves it as much as I do.

May Meeting Recap - Sew In @ Always in Stitches

In May we met again at Always in Stitches in Noblesville for some sewing.

We had a nice turnout with some familiar faces and some new faces and we all spent some time working on our latest projects. The upcoming events were discussed - June's Finished Pizza Party, July's Sewing Activity, August's State Fair Adventure. It was announced that Indy Modern Quilt Guild would be demoing something at the Urban Folk Art Show - Lindsay Conner will be heading this up please let us know if you are interested in participating - there are sign-ups on Facebook. Rachael and Katie also mentioned that we are still working towards having a IMQG show in the Fall and we are looking for a space.

And of course there was some show and tell.

Elizabeth shared the pattern that is cutting pieces for

Julie shared a quilt that she made that is for her house.

As well as a pinwheels baby quilt.

She is also working on a hexagon project using "vintage" fabric from her mom's stash

Gretchen shared some flying geese blocks she's working on

Rachael shared her progress with her hexagon quilt that she will take to Israel next month (I fully believe she'll come back with a finished quilt).

Krista shared a project she started in 4H in highschool and finished recently that she hand-quilted

Robert Kaufman Solids Challenge - KatieJ

Here's KatieJ's quilt for the Robert Kaufman Solid Challenge. And here's what she has to say about it -

"Using solids was a real challenge for me not because I don't like solids but because I LOVE patterns. I fought this tooth and nail and I really wanted to toss in like 2-3 patterns but I resisted the urge although I did allow one for the back. I decided not to cut the charm squares because the colors were too pretty and I only get so much time with my sewing machine and 5 inch squares are pretty easy to manage. I used the squares to make "flowers" although Rachael thinks they look like snails. I usually free-motion all my quilting but this time I did "wonky diagonal" lines at various widths and I really like the look for this quilt. I cannot wait for our next challenge as long as it doesn't involve pointy triangles or anything where you have to follow a pattern as I'm not a pattern girl."

Vintage Sheet Swap This Saturday at Meetup

Just a reminder that the vintage sheet FQ swap in on for this Saturday at Always in Stitches! I've heard from several of you who are getting your sheets ready. Just a couple notes:

1) Bring at least 7 FQs to swap, and extras if you'd like! A few people found more than one type of sheet to swap, so if you bring extras, you'll have a chance to get some more variety.

2) I'm bringing some extra 5x5 charm squares that I cut. If you have leftovers and want to swap charms, go for it. Not required though!

3) Sheets should be pre-washed. If any of your FQs have stains or holes in them, please make sure to sort those out ahead of time and leave them at home.

4) You'll receive the same number of FQs that you bring. (I'll have everyone fill out an index card with their name and the number they brought. Then we can set up the available FQs and have everyone choose the same number to take home.)

5) Haven't signed up yet? No problem! If you will be there and want to participate, just read this and leave a comment or show up with your sheets cut into 18x22 pieces. The more the merrier!

Sound good? Should be fun and low pressure--hope to see you Saturday! And if you cannot make it but can arrange for someone else to bring your FQs, go for it.

Gretchen Fisher My etsy shop is GretchenFisher@etsy.com I'm from here, and I've left the East side for a small stint in Portland, OR and during my college days I lived downtown. Mostly, I never leave the East side.

What sewing machine do you use? Does it have a name? Do you like it?

I have a Viking Emerald. No, I'm too boring to name my machine, or my car, or even a couple of my chickens. I've met people that name everything, though, and I'm a tad envious of their ability to personalize an inanimate object.

Where do you sew? What’s your space look like?

Oh, this is a good one. I've been in a closet for years. Some of the closets have been smaller than others, but just two days ago, I moved my machine to my spare room. I feel so free. I've only told a few people about my coming out....

Tell me about your first quilting experience.

I've been making quilts for babies since I was in high school. Just simple 4" squares. My quilts, up until recently, have all been tied, rather than quilted. I have a chest full of similar quilts from my Grandma, and my mom always did hers the same way. I guess I was just doing what I knew.

What’s your dream machine?

A jaguar? Ummmmm... I really don't have high aspirations from my machines. They must go forward, and sometimes backward. I've done some buttons, some blind stitches, and recently bought a darning foot to try a little free motion. I'm not into the fancy stuff, so until this Viking poops out, I like it just fine.

What is your favorite part of making a quilt?

OH! All of it. Sometimes I start with a pattern idea and pick fabrics that work with it. Other times I start with fabric and hunt down a favorite pattern from my Flickr inspirations. I do a lot of pattern hacking. I like cutting. I like piecing. I like chain sewing. I even like the down time to hand stitch binding. I love making quilts!

What is your most dreaded part of making a quilt?

Oh, okay, so maybe there is one thing I don't care for. I don't like the sandwiching. To sandwich, for me, means moving furniture and shop vac-ing the floor and maybe even washing up my feet after a frolick (sp?) in the garden so that I can throw down and get busy with my batting, front, back and those persnickety little safety pins.

Do you have any great tips and tricks you want to share?

No, not really. YouTube is a great tool for how to videos..... I'd rather a person go there than to watch or listen to me. I'm afraid I'm a little DIY crazy, and my methods surely don't follow the normal protocol.

Where are your favorite brick and mortar quilt shops?

There is one. The Fabric Depot. It's in Portland, and I go once a year. I'm usually there for a big tent sale on Memorial Day weekend. I've never been let down.

What are your favorite online fabric shops?

uh oh. I started out with Fabricworm and have been pretty loyal there. I also like Pink Chalk Fabrics, Sew Mama Sew, and the Fat Quarter Shop. I have a little secret co-op of sorts through flickr where I spend insane amounts of money.

What time of day do you usually sew? Do you listen to music, or watch TV?

I do a little bit of sewing almost every day. If I can get away with it, I won't shower on the weekends.... I'll just sew. It's gross. I might do a load of laundry or something, but I can be maniacal in my sewing regimens. TV is a sleep tool for me, so I stay away from it, but I do occasionally enjoy pandora listening while I sew.

Do you have any sewing or quilting injuries?

Ha, like do I still have all my digits? No, I don't have injuries other than a big booty and a muffin top. Too much sitting. (See previous question.)

What are your favorite crafty blogs and/or Etsy shops?

Oh, I have too many blogs in my google reader. It's partly about the crazy talent out there, and partly about being a bit voyeuristic. I can't believe the things people will share with absolute strangers! I love etsy and tend to get sucked in and find things I convince myself I can't live without, so I've developed an understanding with myself to never set foot in the site unless I'm hunting a gift and have an idea what I'm looking for.

What's your favorite kona cotton color?

I'm in the greys right now.... but I think I'm going to move to curry, mustard and yarrow soon. I was thinking about how to buy a whole bolt of curry.....

What do you love most about IMQG?

Well, I have a bit of an anxiety problem.... (have you caught on that I'm a complete introvert yet?)... so I'm really glad that I've gone to the last two meetings. I'm happy to meet sewing geeks, and go gaga over cute fabric and cool ways to put pieces together. It's nice to have someone to share those same likes with, and not feel like a complete spinster.

Do you sew/make other things besides quilts?

Yes. Bags, curtains, pillows, coasters, shower curtains, you name it, I'll try my hand at it.

What's your favorite project you've completed?

I have so many favorites. When I'm super excited about a quilt it's usually one that ends up staying with me. I have a stack that are ALL MINE.

Robert Kaufman Solids Challenge - Jenny

Up next in the Robert Kaufman Solids Challenge is Jenny. She created a quilt called " Rainy Days and Mondays". Her quilt is 60" x 40" and she added in a gray and white Kona solids. This is what she had to say about her quilt...
"The day that I was trying to come up with a design for the charm pack quilt it was cold, rainy and miserable outside and all I could think of were flowers. My goal was to use as many of the squares that I could with very little to no waste. In addition to the charm pack I purchased two Kona solid colors to complete the front of the quilt.. This was my first time to use pre-cut quilt shapes."

Robert Kaufman Solids Challenge-- Rachael

Since this was a challenge quilt, I decided to challenge myself and try a new-to-me pattern: the Cathedral Window. I decided on this pattern on Ash Wednesday, and thinking of our theme of Spring, the Cathedral Window was a natural choice. I used all but one of the charm squares, along with a ton of Kona white. I added small squares of batting behind each colored fabric, giving it some dimension. This is a "quilt as you go" pattern, so there's no binding and the back is white as well. My only regret is that it isn't a bigger quilt! Thanks to Kaufman and IMQG for this fun challenge.

Robert Kaufman Solids Challenge - Lindsay

Lindsay C created a quilt she calls - Springtime Diamonds Mini Quilt. Here's what she has to say about her quilt...

"I experimented with half square triangles until I got a layout that really. I decided to pair these bright charms with solid gray, to give the feeling of springtime peeking through the dreary weather.

I started with zig zags, moved on to random squares and finally settled on this diamond pattern. I enjoyed the variety of charms in this pack, and added a few extra solids to complete my design.

Here's the back!

Thanks for the chance to design a quilt in solids--I'm now completely sold on the idea, and will be quilting with solids in the future!"

April Meeting Recap - A Trip to the State Museum

In April the Guild met at the Indiana State Museum to see the Frugal Fancy exhibit at the state museum. As it turned out it was also the Yo-Yo State Championships. Quilts + Yo-Yos + Canal Picnic = Win Win!

Anyhow here's a mini recap of the event ...

First stop was some yo-yoing - fyi the thread used for yo-yo's super posh.

The Exhibit had lots of pieces that could fit into our Vintage Modern theme for 2012.

We had some show and tell time. Rachael shared this skirt she made that includes some vintage trim.

Jen shared this bag - don't you love what she did with this panel?

Gretchen brought some quilts she made with vintage sheets.

Rachael also shared a hexagon project she's planning to take on her her trip to Israel.

Robert Kaufman Solids Challenge - Barb

Continuing on with sharing our Robert Kaufman Solids Challenge. Up next is... Spring by Barbara Triscari www.triscartsi.com.

Barb did an interesting twist with the solids in that she made them into prints by creating her own printed fabric. She printed my original photos of flowers and birds on Kona charm squares and used only the charm squares in the quilt top. When she saw the photos on the colored charm squares all lined up after printing, it reminded her of Andy Warhol prints.

She then arranged the photos by colored background to make four color blocks. She says "I enjoyed experimenting with printing on the colored fabrics and was a wonderful way to explore ways to incorporate my photos in my quilts."

Barb free motion quilted these. with some pretty springlike designs.

Robert Kaufman Solids Challenge - KT

We will be featuring everyone's Robert Kaufman Solids Challenge Quilts made by Indy Modern Quilt Guild.

A little background to start us off. We gave each participate a Robert Kaufman charm pack in brights and we asked them to make a quilt with the theme of spring with in two month's time. And we are so excited to share everyone's pieces.

KT's piece is called "April Showers, May Flowers".

It measures 35" by 43". Her goal was to make Dresdens look as if they were raining down onto the ground. She used a blanket stitch to applique' with a variegated thread. All the centers are the same Kona purple pulled from her stash and added to the quilt.

She used a yellow decorative stitch to raw-edge applique', and quilted organic lines with a grey, blue, aqua, purple variegated thread to try to imply rain. She left room for hand stitching (a technical she doesn't recommend and will never do again through Dresden Plates).

A tip from KT to those who want to try it - "your fingers will rebel at all the layers! I also learned that bamboo is not a good choice as the batting stuck to the thread as I hand quilted (bearding)."

For the back she pulled some prints from stash to make a rainbow on the back. She loves how it turned out and so do we!

What sewing machine do you use? Do you like it?
I sew on a Singer 7467, and I love it! I bought it for myself on Black Friday, and it has all the functionality I need as a sewist, until I get the urge to splurge on a fancy Janome.

Where do you sew? What’s your space look like?
I live in an 1898 historic home in downtown Anderson. Up until last summer, my husband and I rented out space in the very large house to cut costs and share life with our community of friends.

But since it's just us now, I do enjoy having my own sewing room! It's nothing fancy, but I do like the curtains that I edged in Amy Butler fabric. Here's what part of my room looks like when it's tidy.

Tell me about your first quilting experience.
My first quilt was sewn for the heck of it, and I ended up gifting it to a friend for her first baby (to use as a play mat). I bought a Moda 1984 charm pack on eBay for less than $5 and used a disappearing 9-patch pattern, although I didn't know what it was called back then. I also didn't understand how binding worked, so I just cut the quilt back large enough to "roll to the front" and cover my batting. It was a hot mess, but has survived to this day and is well loved. :)

What is your favorite part of making a quilt?
Fabric shopping! And choosing which fabrics will go together.

What is your most dreaded part of making a quilt?
Quilting the layers. Probably because my machine doesn't have a very wide neck, and I've never been very adventurous with this process.

6. What’s your favorite fabric line of all time?
I don't know about "all time," but right now I am obsessed with anything by Momo. Especially those Wonderland scissors.

What fabric trend are you most excited about?
Solids!

Where are your favorite brick and mortar quilt shops?
Always in Stitches in Noblesville, especially for their 40% off clearance section and fat quarter sales each month on the 25th. I also shop JoAnn's with coupons.

What are your favorite online fabric shops?
Sew Fresh Fabrics and Crafty Girls Workshop have sponsored some giveaways for me, and I've loved how nice they are to work with. Also, I dig Missouri Quilt Company's Daily Deal Alert, although I've yet to cave and purchase any.

What time of day do you usually sew? Do you listen to music, or watch TV?
I typically sew on the weekends, all day Saturday and all day Sunday if I can get away with it! I like to sew in front of the TV, but that requires lugging all of my stuff downstairs, so I only do this if I'm going to make a day out of it.

Do you have any sewing or quilting injuries?
Yes, I have at least one or two burn marks from ironing.

What are your favorite crafty blogs and/or Etsy shops?
Too many to list. I subscribe to a TON of craft and sewing blogs, especially since I started theCraft Buds blog with my friend Mary. I like to stay on top of what is happening out there--I'd say that craft blogging is as much a passion for me as actually sewing.

What do you love most about IMQG?
Meeting other people who love fabric as much as I do. Quilters rock.

Do you sew/make other things besides quilts?
Yes, I sew stuffed animals (like this little guy), bags and some clothing.

Quilts Around Indiana - Quilt Gardens

If you are looking for a quilting adventure not far from Indy - Check out the Quilt Gardens in Elkhart County. 18 gardens featuring 18 quilt designs. It's funky, it's fresh, it's flowers. It could be a fun excursion for you and your family.

The gardens are made from over 100,000 blooms arranged to resemble quilts. They can be found along the roads of Indiana's Heritage Trail.

March Meeting Recap

We had a great meeting last Saturday at Always in Stitches in Noblesville. After introductions and show and tell, the ten of us quickly got to work in various stations: cutting, sewing,

pressing, and spectating.

Everyone contributed a fat quarter, and we made a total of 14 simple striped blocks together. I took the blocks home and will configure t

hem into a quilt top, and Tisha will make the backing. This will be IMQG's first charity quilt.

Always in Stitches was very generous; in addition to providing space for us to sew, we also got goody bags! Many of us took advantage of the sweet fat quarter sale that was going on, too.

IMQG's next meeting will be Saturday, April 30, downtown at the Indiana State Museum to check out the Frugal and Fancy quilt exhibit. Also, for those of us participating in theRobert Kaufman Challenge, you have exactly one month to complete your quilt!

Vintage Modern on Wednesday

This week I decided to look at quilts specifically. I’m inspired by women that used to sit and hand sew big quilts. My great-grandmother Waggoner made a wonderful around the world quilt. My grandmother had it on her bed in the guest room. As a little girl I would sit and just look at it, follow the blocks around, and usually found a new print that I had not seen before. Thank goodness my grandmother kept her mother’s hand sewn pieces, I have them put away in my sewing room. Wish I had inspiration to do something with them.

Wonder how old these actually are?

Can you imagine the time that it took? Then again they didn’t have TV, internet, Facebook, 60 hour a week jobs to get in their way. They lived very different lives from us even just 80+ years ago. How many of us had home ec in school? We did very limited sewing in the class, mostly cooking. Luckily my grandmother had taught me to sew long before the class. It was very boring for me. Imagine what those women could do with all of the technology we have now.

Sewing Machine Quilting

For a couple of summers my mom and her friend would go to estate sales and auctions for fun. Sometimes they would find wonderful old fabric stashes, patterns, pieces, etc. This had to be my favorite…it was filled with fabric. My mom’s friend gave it to me as a college graduation gift, I thought it was perfect.

In line with our Vintage Modern theme, there's been some interest in a vintage sheet fat quarter swap!

I recently discovered vintage sheets from blog hopping, when I stumbled across all kinds of giveaways at this site, the Vintage Sheet Blog. I'm even sponsoring a little FQ giveaway there through 3/31, so check it out if you dig the vintage stuff!

I'm open to suggestions on how this would work, but I'm thinking we can all cut fat quarter pieces (22x18) from vintage sheets, and swap the same number of fat quarters as we contribute.

To find your vintage sheet, check out thrift stores, yard sales, consignment shops, or online shops. Here are some other guidelines:

Wash your sheet before cutting
Make sure none of your fat quarters have stains or any moldy sections, because someone with allergies might receive it.
You can swap all FQs from one design or multiple patterns (like if you find two table runners or a fitted sheet and some pillowcases).
Swap date is to be decided, but I'm thinking we'll look for our sheets in April, then cut and swap in May or June.

With luck, we'll end up with enough variety to make one of these soon!

We can swap at a future meetup (free shipping), or I'd be willing to handle to swapped sheets by mail as long as people are willing to send postage. I'll take a poll of the people who are interested and see which option sounds best!

Vintage Modern Monday

Blue is color that I am usually drawn to. Hubby and I are working on re-painting our bedrooms in the next few months. I am looking at a vareity of dark blues for an accent wall. A nice light gray will be the primary color on the walls. So I wanted to look at vintage blue fabrics that could be used in our design.

The buttons would be a great accent for the room. Fabrics and design can't be overly girly. I think these fabrics would be great for the room.

As a side note, I can't believe how easy it is now to find vintage fabrics that are in good condition. These are fabrics that could easily be found at local quilt stores right now.

Quilter of the Month: Tisha!

Q. Mandatory: Name, blog/etsy shop, hometown, current location

Tisha Nagel, Quiltytherapy.com & quiltytherapy.etsy.com. I'll just claim Indy all around.

Q. What sewing machine do you use? Does it have a name? Do you like it?

Brother 6000 something. So far this thing has been a work horse.

Q. Where do you sew? What’s your space look like?

I sew in the 2nd bedroom in our house. It was a must have.

Q. Tell me about your first quilting experience.

Well it was pretty terrible. I waited until Christmas break from school to start a quilt for my parents. I went over to gmas at night to work on it. Christmas Eve I still had LOTS to do. My parents would NOT go to bed. I passed out finally and woke up after they went to bed. I stayed up until like 3am to get the thing done. Ran out of binding so I had to stop. Not good to give a gift with pins left in it. Parents loved it but was not my best work. I think it only fueled my fabric addiction.

Q. What’s your dream machine?

At home long arm so I too can pump out like 10 quilts a week.

Q. What is your favorite part of making a quilt?

The design process. I love taking fabric and creating an idea based what I see when I look at it. I have been known to start designing something right on the spot. The anticipation of seeing it come together is really exciting for me.

Q. What is your most dreaded part of making a quilt?

Basting. I have to clean the floors at my house really well because of the mongrels (dogs). Then being on my hands and knees pinning and pressing makes me feel ridiculous.

Q. What quilting/fabric trend are you ‘over’?

Civil War stuff, it does nothing for me.

Q. What’s your favorite fabric line of all time?

Timeless Treasures Botanica and/or Benartex Habitat

Q. What fabric trend are you most excited about?

Honestly, solids. You can really do a lot with them.

Q. Where are your favorite brick and mortar quilt shops?

Quilts Plus, they are always so nice. Plus, it's close to the house.

Q. What are your favorite online fabric shops?

Too many to choose from.

Q. What time of day do you usually sew? Do you listen to music, or watch TV?

I like to sew in the mornings since I have that time at home w/o any interruptions. Gets my brain going for the day. I usually have Pandora on. Typically it is my Petey Pablo station, better known as southern rap. My husband laughs at me since rap music and quilting don't usually pair well.

Q. Do you have any sewing or quilting injuries?

Does no feeling in right middle fingertip count? Thank you iron and needles. Pretty sure I am going to develop some weird calus there.

Q. What are your favorite crafty blogs and/or Etsy shops?

Red Pepper Quilts always has something that I want to make.

Q. What do you love most about IMQG?

Meeting others that are like me, yet we are each so different. My friends completely support my quilting but none are really into my fabric, sewing, quilting addiction. I hope that other members can help me grow and challenge me to try new things.

Q. Do you sew/make other things besides quilts?

Potholders and other stuff. I will try anything except clothes.

Q. What's your favorite project you've completed?

My friend's wedding quilt. It was different, bright and matched her colors.

Q. Do you want to share any sneak peaks of anything you're working on?

Sure, there is a lot in the works right now. I started a list just to keep track of what I need to get done. Here is a sneak peek of a green and brown baby quilt I completed the top on.

Let's Get Vintage Modern - April Event!

Vintage Modern @ Indiana State Museum

When: Saturday April 30th, 2011 at 1pm - 4pm

Where: Indiana State Museum - 650 West Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN

What: IMQG April Meeting. Please RSVP on Facebook or by posting to this post to let us know if you will attend.
Costs: Admission is $7 if we have 10 or more attendees. Lunch Money. Depending on the weather we may picnic on the canal.
Activities: Visiting the Frugal Fancy Exhibit and anything else we want to see at the museum. We are planning to have show and tell with the Robert Kaufman Challenge and/or a "Vintage Modern piece". We are also planning on having lunch at the museum if it's nice we'll do it picnic style on the canal.

February Meeting Recap

In February we met at the West Side Select Sewing shop. We had several new faces and some familar faces at the meeting this month. As usual it was great to spend some time discussing our passion for modern quilting. We kicked off the meeting with introductions and attendance (big thanks to Rachael for keeping us on track). We announced upcoming meeting and event dates. We also did a little show and tell - oh so many fantastic projects and quilts were shared.

Then we made nametags using our leftover scraps, random rick rack. The Results were awesome everyone's is so unique and so different.

Next Meeting - March 26th at Always in Stitches in Noblesville. We're going to do a project in a Round Robin fashion. Since we'll be at a shop that is graciously providing us space and goodie bags, the thought is that we should each buy at least a fat quarter to use for our project. Vintage Modern Monday

We are kicking off our theme for 2011, Vintage Modern. More information will be coming later along with events. I started looking around for inspiration. Every Monday I will showcasing what I found in the hopes of inspiring others.

I love searching around for pieces that inspire me to create. When picking fabrics I tend to gravitate towards stripes. They can be so classic and at the same time pull lots of different designs and colors together.

Robert Kaufman Charm Pack Challenge

If you are participating in the Kona Charm Pack Challenge, the theme is "spring" and you are invited to interpret that any way your wish. Make a block, two blocks, a mug rug--whatever your heart desires. Though you may use other fabrics, the focus should be on the solids in the charm pack!

Please have your finished piece photographed by April 30. Share your photos with the IMQG Flickr group and include a short story about your inspiration and vision. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

The Indianapolis Modern Quilt Guild is a part of The Modern Quilt Guild network and was started for modern sewists to connect and create together. There are no rules about what "modern quilting" is or is not, but we think it is the freedom to create or design in a way that feels "right" to you! All experience levels are welcomed and encouraged to join!

Here are some things you can do to connect with other modern quilters locally:

Attend the monthly IMQG meetup. Dates will be posted on this blog and the Facebook group, so following both is a great way to stay in touch.
Upload pictures of quilts you've done, via Flickr or Facebook.
Tell your friends! Bring a friend to a meeting or invite them to follow this blog.
If you have a blog, share it with the group, and check out other member's blogs. It's a great way to get to know one another. (Just comment on any post to have your blog added to the blogroll.)
